Additional Site Information

Naval Support Activity (NSA) Bahrain is located east of Saudi Arabia and north of Qatar, in the municipality of Al Manamah. NSA Bahrain is a Navy Base hosting the Fifth Fleet - Commander U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (COMUSNAVCENT) - which is directed out of Pensacola, Fla. Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force service branches are also present. The Bahrain base hosts Greek, French, Australian, Japanese, and Polish Naval coalition forces, as well as others. The base serves as a port for Navy ships in the Persian gulf.

Bahrain, officially the Kingdom of Bahrain, is a borderless island country located in the Persian Gulf and the smallest Arab nation. It is physically connected to Saudi Arabia by the King Fahd causeway. As a Kingdom, Bahrain is ruled by Sheikh Hammad Bin Isa Bin Salman Al-Khalifa. Islam is the state religion in Bahrain with the majority of the population practicing Shia Islam, however individuals living in Bahrain have many personal freedoms and the country is far more liberal and tolerant than many other Gulf Cooperation Counsel (GCC) nations.

There is a large British community in Bahrain, due to the fact that Bahrain was a British colony until 1952, along with many Pakistani, Indian, and Asian immigrants. Americans and other foreign nationals living in Bahrain practice certain cultural courtesies and follow a conservative dress code, however women are not required to wear the traditional Islamic clothing to include the hijab (modest, loose clothing and a scarf over the head and under the chin) or burqa/burka (a complete covering of the head, face, and body).  U.S. military memebrs are not permitted to wear their uniforms off base.

There is no base lodging, however given the NSA's cental location within Al Manama, many hotels are available within walking distance of the base. On base there is a Naval Exchange, fitness center, outdoor swimming pool and several dining facilities.
