Directions and Parking

The UMUC office is located in the NAS I Education Center, Building 318.

To find our location, please take SS 192 from the Catania Airport (Fontanarossa) toward Palermo. As you approach the base, the SS 192 curves to the right as you go up a small hill, the base is located on the left side of the road. After you enter the base and pass through the inspection area, turn right at the first road and follow that road straight as it curves around the perimeter of the base. Parking is available on the left side of the street in front of Bldg 318. The Navy College is located on the second floor of the Community building, across from the public library.

Computer Labs

The UMUC sponsored computer lab has 24 computers available for student use. Each computer provides access to the Internet, as well as a word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. The computer lab is accessible Mon-Fri, 0830-1630.

Testing Services

Placement tests for English and math courses and proctored exams for distance education courses are available through your local UMUC office. Please contact the field representative to schedule an appointment.

Additional Site Information

Sigonella is in the eastern part of the island of Sicily. The two military installations are located just south of Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna. The nearest civilian town is Motta San Anastasia and the closest city is Catania, the second largest city in Sicily. The Catania Airport is located east of the baseabout a 15 minute east of the base.

The United States Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella, Sicily is the primary operational and logistical support element for U.S. 6th Fleet operations, earning the nickname “Hub of the Med”. The two bases within the Sigonella community, NAS I and NAS II, are a 15 minute drive apart. UMUC offers classes on both installations. A base-sponsored shuttle bus provides free transportation between the two bases.

NAS I is the support site providing DODDS schools, Navy Hospital, Navy College, fitness and recreation center with an outdoor swimming pool, the NEX shopping complex, movie theater, and library. Lodging is available on NAS I at the Navy Lodge Inn or on a space available basis at the BOQ. Dining facilities including an Applebees restaurant and a food court with Anthony's Pizza, Italian food, Burger King, Subway, and Taco Bell. Across the street from the NAS I gate are several Italian restaurants, a gas station, hair salon and several boarding houses.

NAS II is the operational base providing the flight line, the commands that support the 6th Fleet operation, and the motor vehicle registration. Additionally, there are BEQs and BOQs, a galley dining facility, and fast food restaurants.
