In addition, Bowie State University graduate students must meet the following requirements:

  • Achieve a cumulative grade point average of B (3.0) or higher for all BSU graduate course work.

Advancement to Candidacy

Advancement to Candidacy is a major step in fulfilling the requirements for the master’s degree. Graduate Programs will review students’ records to determine eligibility for advancement to candidacy. Students may advance to candidacy by:

  1. Being fully admitted.
  2. Having an approved Program of Study (POS).
  3. Completing the first 15 credit hours of courses with Bowie State University with a GPA of 3.25. Should the required average not be attained, advancement to candidacy will be denied. Students who fail to advance to candidacy may submit a written petition to the Director, Graduate Programs for permission to repeat one course.
  4. Removing all grades of Incomplete (I) from courses in the POS.
  5. Satisfying all undergraduate prerequisites.

    Comprehensive Examination

    Students must successfully complete a written graduate comprehensive examination and are encouraged to take the examination as soon as they are eligible.

    Examination dates and deadlines:

    Research Paper/Project

      Successfully complete a research paper/project. Students complete an information systems project in the practicum course (INSS 880 Information Systems Practicum) and an analytical or scientific research paper in the professional seminar course (INSS 890 Professional Seminar).

    Time Limit

      Complete all requirements for the master's degree within a seven-year period. An extension will be granted automatically if a required course is not offered during the last term of the student's seven-year period. The expiration date is listed on the student's Program of Study.
