Course Description:
| An exploration of the principles and elements of pictorial space examined through the manipulation and organization of various materials. | |
Course Goals/Objectives:
Through hands-on art projects, presentations of the work of other artists, classroom discussions and individual evaluations, students will be able to:
1. employ and discuss the elements of visual design - their definitions, their characteristics, and their compositional uses. 2. recognize design concepts and principles suitable for use in two-dimensional compositions. 3. demonstrate some work with various 2D media choices, becoming familiar with their properties, their limitations and their expressive potentials. 4. explore the 2D design qualties inherent in lettering and how to compose with manuscript or type. 5. evaluate the importance of idea development in the creative process as the basis for later media and process choices. 6. articulate a greater appreciation for their own and others' creative ideas and for the artwork that expresses these ideas.
Course Introduction:
| 2D Art Fundamentals is an introductory art course aimed at familiarizing students with basic design strategies for manipulating pictorial space. It is designed for both beginning art students and those with past design experience. Using painting and drawing mediums, "found" papers, collage techniques and lettering type, students will learn to create projects demonstrating both compositional unity and expressive strength. | |
Grading Information and Criteria:
Grades for this course will be based on an assessment of work done in the classroom, of assignments completed outside of class and of a final project due at the end of the last class session. Artwork will be evaluated on the basis of quality of workmanship, of aesthetic appeal, of innovation within the assignment and of progress towards stated objectives.
Letter grades will reflect the following standards:
A= Outstanding, well-executed work that reflects a full understanding of the parameters of the problem. B= Very good work, above average understanding of the problem. Room remains for improvement. C= Average work that meets the requirements of the problem. There is considerable room for improvement. D= Completed, but below average work that does not reflect an understanding of the problem. F= Failure to complete the assignment in accordance with the parameters of the problem.
Other Information:
| * Class attendance with appropriate materials is critical. | |
Project Descriptions:
| Specific projects will depend on the individual instructors and students, but will include drawing, type and lettering, collage, and design. | |
