Common Syllabus for BIOL161

Course Title:

Laboratory in Human Biology

Course Materials:

Mader, S. S. (2008). Human biology lab manual (10th ed.). New York: McGraw Hill.

Course Description:

BIOL 161 Laboratory in Human Biology (1) (Fulfills the laboratory science requirement only with previous or concurrent credit for BIOL 160.) Prerequisite or corequisite: BIOL 160. A laboratory study that uses the human organism as an example to illustrate the concepts underlying the organization and interrelationships of all living organisms.

Course Goals/Objectives:

After completing this course, students should be able to do the following:

* form sound scientific questions and answer them using the scientific method
* explain the physical and chemical foundations of cellular function
* describe the structure of cells and the functions of cell organelles
* describe the cell cycle and compare mitosis with meiosis
* describe the basic anatomy and physiology of human organ systems
* give concrete examples of homeostasis from several human organ systems
* give concrete examples of human interactions with the environment.

Course Introduction:

This is an introductory laboratory course that illustrates the basic underlying the organization and interrelationships of living organisms using human beings as an example. The course will begin with an introduction to the scientific method and its practical application to science as well as everyday questions and problems. Upon this foundation, hands-on lab activities using the techniques of observation, experimentation, data recording and data analysis will be used. Lab activities will be performed that demonstrate the molecular and cellular processes of human beings, as well as their structural and functional organization and interactions with their environment. This course is designed to reinforce the basic principles of human biology as discussed in detail in BIOL 160.

Grading Information and Criteria:

Grades in this course will be determined as follows:

10% Class Participation
10% Quizzes
55% Laboratory Exercises
25% Final Exam

The grading scale in this course will be determined as follows:

A = 90%-100%
B = 80%-89%
C = 70%-79%
D = 60%-69%
F = 0%-59%

Other Information:

None

Project Descriptions:

Quizzes
The quizzes are designed to assess your understanding of the basic principles of human biology and laboratory procedures on an ongoing basis throughout the course. The questions may include those in the following formats: multiple choice, matching, short-answer, fill-in-the-blank, and problem solving. They will include material covered in the readings, lab exercises, lectures, and class discussions.

Laboratory Exercises
Various laboratory projects are required in this course and are designed to reinforce the basic principles of human and organismal biology, as discussed in detail in BIOL 160.

Final Exam
A final exam is required in this course. This exam will include the topics and skills covered in the required readings, laboratory exercises, lectures, and class discussions.
