Course Description:

(Formerly MGMT 300 Leadership and Management in an Age of Diversity.Fulfills the civic responsibility requirement.)  Prerequisite: BMGT 364.

An exploration of the challenges to effective leadership and management that the contemporary manager faces in a rapidly changing environment. Focus is on leadership styles and motivational techniques conducive to high performance in various organizational settings with a very diverse workforce. Topics include issues in the design of organizations, the corporate/organizational culture, the design and enrichment of jobs, and communication within organizations. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses:  BMGT 365, MGMT 300, MGST 310, or TEMN 310.

Course Goals/Objectives:

By the end of the course the student will be able to:
- discuss the leadership theories and leader roles for workforce diversity, marketplace globalization, technology applications, and organizational innovation and change;
- relate the effects on performance of corporate strategy, culture, structure, and job design;
- assess the climate for high performance by communications and motivation  approaches;
- explain the how, when, and where different styles of leadership affect organizational performance;
- summarize the complex processes and procedures leaders and managers need to follow to ensure quality, efficiency, and competitive advantage in the business environment; and
- articulate a personal philosophy of leadership and leader behavior that demonstrates a thorough grasp of the course material.

Cross Curricular Initiatives
In addition to these learning objectives, this course also concentrates on UMUC's cross-curriculum initiatives, detailed below, designed to help UMUC students build business skills to enhance their careers and overall effectiveness in their employment.

Effective writing. There are writing assignments throughout the semester. Those assignments are expected to indicate appropriate professional writing skills. That is, they will be evaluated on the basis of grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and overall sound writing principles. The student should demonstrate effective written communications consistent with a professional business environment.

Information literacy. Students will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in  research activities using the library and use of online sources.
Globalization. While this course will focus on domestic and national  business and management firms, an important outcome will be the realization that the management principles apply to global  and multinational organizations.

Fluency in technology. The student should demonstrate proficiency  use the computer for writing tasks (including charts/graphs in written assignments).

Historical Perspective. Historical development of  business management theory provides the student with a context for current practices.

Civic Responsibility. Positive and negative ethical behavior and role of business organizations in society will be explored in this course.

Course Introduction:

Most people think of management and leadership as the same thing. But leadership is much more than that. Leadership is a process that begins by determining that there is an opportunity to satisfy an organizational need or want. Resources are then planned, and decisions made to fulfill that need or want. This plan must include all of the characteristics of the organizational mission.

Grading Information and Criteria:

A = 90-100%; B = 80-89%; C = 70-79%; D = 60-69%; F below 60%
