Cross Curricular Initiatives

In addition to these learning objectives, this course also concentrates on UMUC's cross-curriculum initiatives, detailed below, designed to help UMUC students build business skills to enhance their careers and overall effectiveness in their employment.

Effective writing. There are numerous writing assignments throughout the semester. Those assignments are expected to reflect appropriate professional writing skills. That is, they will be evaluated on the basis of grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and overall sound writing principles. At least 10 percent of your grade on each writing assignment will be based on your proficiency in expressing yourself in writing.

Information literacy. You will be expected to demonstrate proficiency at research activity through the library and use of online sources.

Globalization. An important outcome of this course will be the realization that the human resource management principles apply to global situations.

Computerization. The computer has dramatically altered the way human resource management is conducted. This course will emphasize the increasing use of the computer and the Internet in human resource management.

Historical Perspective. This course will integrate the historical development of theory to provide the student with a context for current theories and practice.

Civic Responsibility. Ethical behavior and role of human resource management in society will be explored in this course.

Course Introduction:

The purpose of this course is to enhance your awareness and understanding of the importance and function of human resources management. You will be required to sharpen your skills in both analysis and written communication. During the course, you will learn about ethical approaches to human resources management; how human resources management is affected by legal, global, and economic environments; and the importance of planning for, organizing, managing, and rewarding these "human" resources.

Grading Information and Criteria:

Grades will be determined by the following combination of tests, and written assignments.

Case analysis #1     20%
Case analysis #2     20%
Midterm exam         20%
Class participation  20%
Final exam           20%
Total               100%

Grades will be computed using the percentage points a student earned.

90% & above = A
80% to 89% = B
70% to 79% = C
60% to 79% = D
less than 60% = F

Other Information:

Any other information the instructor wishes to add. This might include:

* General expectations of students, such as hours per week students should expect to devote to the class
* Turnaround time for faculty to respond to email and return papers
* Unique class procedures or activities (such as cooperative learning exercises, panel presentations, case study methods, class journals or learning logs)
* Supplemental objectives (such as development of skills like teamwork, writing, oral presentation; integration of knowledge on focus topics)
* Optional activities such as study groups

Project Descriptions:

The Case Analyses are a 3 - 4 page response to 2 cases provided by the lecturer. The analysis must include:

1) a brief, one paragraph, summary of the case,
2) a statement of your proposed solution to the case,
3) the reasons that solution will work for the case, citing course material where appropriate
4) a conclusion restating the important points in your analysis in a clear concise manner.

Approach this assignment as if you had just been hired as a human resource manager in an organization and you have been assigned to come up with a solution to this particular problem. Brief but complete answers are expected because your boss is very busy. Use of outside sources to support your solution will strengthen your standing with the manager. Of course any outside sources must be acknowledged with appropriate bibliographic information.

Academic Policies:

Cases of plagiarism are handled consistent with current UMUC guidelines.
