Renaissance Art in Florence Sample Syllabus

Hotel: Hotel Giada
            Via Canto dei Nelli 2

            Florence
            Tel. (+39) 055 215-317

The hotel is situated beside the church of SAN LORENZO, 2 blocks from the central train station of Santa MARIA NOVELLA and one block from the town cathedral. A bus links the Florence Airport to the Sta Maria Novella train station. If you fly into PISA, there is a train from the Pisa airport or central train station to the Florence central (S.M.N) Train station every hour. From the central station, walk out to the Piazza of the train station and then over to the left (if your back is to the front of the station) to the Piazza dell’UNITA ITALIANA. Here take the street via MELARANCIO to the small Piazza of MADONNA di  ALDOBRANDINI. With your back to the beginning of via Faenza, take the street beginning to your left: this is the street where the hotel Giada is: Via CANTO dei NELLI. The hotel is just after the 1st street on your left (via Ariento.) (See map) All rooms have 2 beds with bath or shower. Continental breakfast is included in the price and is served from 7:30 on. There is an internet point around the corner from the hotel.

LUGGAGE: Weather varies: layers are good in Florence because the days can become warm, but the nights remain cool. A raincoat &/ or umbrella is a good idea but above all comfy shoes- we walk a lot.

Other helpful additions are: a clipboard for taking notes in the museums, a flashlight and opera glasses or binoculars. The lighting in the hotel is O.K. but you may wish to bring a little reading lamp.

MEALS: Other than breakfast, meals are the concern of the student. There are many cheap and good eateries nearby as well as the central food market which is just around the corner.  These will be indicated to you upon your arrival. One light and one full meal should not cost more than $25 a day.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS: All students should have a student card (ask your fieldrep) and a valid passport which is needed for cashing travel checks. You cannot cash a personal check here and the nearest base is 90 mins. away. Arrive with some cash ($50)

in lire or EURO. Florence is a safe city except for PICKPOCKETS EVERYWHERE, as in any big city.

Class begins at the hotel GIADA at 1200 hours Day 1. Let me know if you arrive later.
