Hemingway in Madrid

Hemingway in Madrid

Madrid, Spain
18 - 25 October 2008 (Session 1)
ENGL 288Q / 388Q
3 s.h.

Although the novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, occurs in the north of Spain during the Spanish Civil War, Ernest Hemingway actually spent that period in Madrid.  Some say he spent more time in the Hotel Florida than in the battlefields of Brunete and Jarama on the outskirts of the city.  Both before and after this time, he traveled extensively in the country pursuing his second favorite spectacle: the bullfight.  Hemingway's passions for sensuous delights and his discovery and description of man's capacity for dignity in danger and even defeat, as portrayed in the novels Fiesta and Death in the Afternoon, drew him to return to this country which was, in the words of Castille-Puche, "an obsession, an insatiable need, the most precious part of Hemingway’s art perhaps and the key to his style."
