Expatriate Writers in Venice: 1800 to Present
Explore romantic Venice, beloved by world-renowned writers like James and Hemingway, by major poets such as Byron and Browning, and by art critics and essayists. Revel in the intense sensations of the glorious past and hauntingly beautiful present of a city that has always lured and held the hearts of visitors. This course will combine the visual influences of Venice--her architecture, art works, and picturesque landscape--with study of the great literature produced there. No other place has given so many famous writers quite this combination of ingredients which encourage creative inspiration. Literary walks, with on-site examination of significant passages, provide a living sense of the writers' purposes and an appreciation of their powers of description. Instructor: Dr. Toni Sepeda RequirementsENGL 288B - Students will take three quizzes and a comprehensive essay examination, and will also participate in a literary salon. ENGL 388B - In addition to the lower level requirements, upper-level students will write a paper due three weeks after the end of the course. This Field Study course is applicable to an upper- or lower-level course for English, humanities, Italian studies, or elective credit. RegistrationTuition for a three-semester-hour course must be paid to the Maryland field representative at your education center. Tuition Assistance and Financial Aid are applicable toward tuition.TextbooksTextbooks, which must be read prior to the beginning of the course, will be sent to the field representative in the education center where the student has registered for the course. Readings, which must also be read prior to the course, will be forwarded to each student once registration is confirmed with the Field Study Office in Heidelberg. Textbooks will cost approximately $45. Textbooks and prices are subject to change; field representatives should contact the Field Study Office at the time of registration to confirm details. Textbooks will include:Death in Venice, Thomas Mann (Upper-level students only)In addition, students will receive a packet containing excerpts from the poetry of Lord Byron, Robert Browning, Ezra Pound, and from Henry James' Italian Hours. Accommodations and TransportationA block of double-occupancy rooms will be reserved. Continental breakfast is included; other meals are the responsibility of the student. Students desiring accommodations in the reserved hotel should contact the faculty member before the registration deadline. Please include arrival and departure dates. Rooms are approximately $45 per night per person, and payment will be arranged in Venice. Please contact the instructor at tosepeda@libero.it for details. UMUC reserves the right to adjust costs according to the fluctuation of the dollar exchange rate. If the course is cancelled by UMUC, all payments will be refunded.Transportation to and from Venice is the responsibility of the student.
